Goodbye!
Oval Callout: Goodbye!

After 10 years at CES, I will be saying goodbye.  I am going to be staying at home with Maeve & working on my own artwork.  I have had a great time teaching art to hundreds of kids & watching them grow up through the years.  I will miss all of you!  (But I'm sure I'll see many of you at Kroger!)  Have a great summer!      -Mrs. Y

Make a flake!

Art @ Home

Art projects to try for fun...or to help you with a class project!

Sawdust & soap clay:

bullet 1 1/2 cups sawdust
bullet 1 1/2 cups soap flakes (if you can't find soap flakes at the store, make some by shredding a bar of Ivory soap into flakes).
bullet water

Mix water and soap flakes to make a thick mixture. Whip the soap until fluffy and stiff. Add the sawdust. Model the mixture into shapes and let dry for a few days.

Faux tie-dye:
Color on a coffee filter with washable markers & then spray with water...leave as it is or use your "tie-dye" to create something!

Magic picture:
Draw with white crayon on white paper...paint over entire paper with watercolors...see what happens!
What can you make from empty toilet paper & paper towel rolls?? Glue together, add paper, paint, streamers, etc...use your imagination!
Papier mache:
Paste:
Make a simple, thin paste from flour and water. Mix 1 cup of flour into 2 cups of water, add more water if the mixture is not thin and runny - add 2-3 tablespoons of salt. Stir well.  Can save in container up to 1 week in refrigerator.
Tear a lot of strips of newspaper, paper towels and/or brown bag paper. Strips should be about 1 inch wide; the length doesn't really matter.
Dip a newspaper strip into the paste, wipe off excess paste with fingers...then wrap it around the base. Cover the entire project, then let it dry (it make take a day or more to dry).
**The words "Papier Mache" mean "chewed paper"!
Baking dough:
bullet 1 cup salt
bullet 1 1/2 cups warm water
bullet 4 cups all purpose flour

Stir the salt into the warm water. Let cool. Add flour and knead for 8-10 minutes. For coloring the dough, add food coloring or powdered tempera paint to the salt and water - before adding the flour. Create figures and bake at 325 degrees F for 30 minutes to one hour (until all the moisture is gone). Paint creations when cool. You can also seal the complete work with a non-toxic water-based sealer.

Kool-Aid play dough:
bullet 1/2 cup salt
bullet 2&1/2 cups flour
bullet 2 pkg Kool-AidŽ
bullet 3 tbsp oil
bullet 2 cups boiling water

Mix dry ingredients. Add oil. Add water and knead. This play dough is colorful and has a wonderful fragrance as well. Store in plastic bags in the fridge.

Popsicle paint:
bullet Pour liquid tempera paint into ice cube trays or other containers.
bullet Put craft or popsicle sticks in each compartment (they may lean a bit, but that's OK)
bullet Let set overnight in freezer.
bullet Dip bottom of container in warm water to loosen.
bullet PAINT!

Marbeled paper:
Get a CLEAN kitty litter box, Stay-Flo Liquid starch, tempera or acrylic paints, plastic fork, paper & newspaper....pour liquid starch into litter box about 1 inch deep. Drop paints onto the liquid starch so that it floats on top.   Use your fork to move it to your liking.  Do not mix it up like scrambled eggs!!  Gently lay your paper on top & then peel up from the corner.  Let excess drip off, then place flat on newspaper to dry.  You can clean the liquid somewhat by swirling a paper towel over it to pick up excess paint.
